very simply if they were not there the train is so heavy it would push the tracks in to the grond underneath them and then crash.

Answer:

Due to the pressure of these heavy trains , the rails may sink into ground. Wide wooden sleepers are placed below the rails so that the pressure that is applied by the trains can be distributed over a large area and hence the rails would not sink into ground.
