(a) When sulphur is heated in the presence of air, sulphur dioxide SO2 is formed.

(i) Sulphur dioxide is a neutral gas and thus there is no change on dry litmus paper.

(ii) Sulphur dioxide is acidic in nature, thus it changes colour of blue litmus paper into red

(b) The balanced chemical equation is:

S(s) +O2(g) –> SO2(g)
