Sliced potato kept in saline water why
- The potato shrinks when kept in saline water bcoz The salt concentration in the water is much greater than inside the potato cells.
- Osmosis tries to establish a balance, and as the NaCl cannot travel into the cells ,water passes out in an attempt to dilute the external solution.

When it is kept in saline water the medium outside it becomes more concentrated,i.e. Hypertonic while inside the potato there is dilute medium,i.e. Hypotonic therefore the potato will release its water content and will become plasmolysed,i.e. it will shrink to become smaller in size.
This all is done to show the process called exosmosis.
