2 (x + 3) = 16

2x + 6 = 16

2x = 16 - 6

2x = 10

x = 10/2

x = 5.

Notice how I changed the (+) sign into (-) and the (×) sign into (÷).

To remove the brackets, I multiplied 2 by x and 3.
