Question

Slove x+y =5 and 2x-3y=4 by the substitution method.

Answer

x+y=5 ------(1). (given)

and

2x-3y=4 ---------(2). (given)

___________________

In eq.(1),

x+y=5

x=5-y--------(3)

______________________

Substituting eq.(3) in eq.(2), we get,

= 2(5-y)-3y=4

= 10-2y-3y=4

= -5y=4-10

= -5y = -6

= y = (6/5)

___________________________

Subtsituting value of y in eq.(1), we get,

= x + (6/5) = 5

= x = 5-(6/5)

= x = (19/5)

_______________________________

Therefore, x = (19/5) and y = (6/5).
