small debate against old customs

Answer:
It’s ridiculous how westernised Indians tend to use the word “tradition” when connected with India as synonymous with retrogressive and anti-freedom. They want us to treat traditions as a liability and not as an asset so that we become mindless apes of the western lifestyle. But most Indians know that traditions, if handled judiciously, can be great assets for society.
They connect our past with our present and the future. People without roots in past cannot have a creative sense of their future. I take the following quotation of Mahatma Gandhi as my guiding light in this matter: “It is good to swim in the waters of tradition but to sink in them is suicide.”Take our tradition of taking care of our parents in their old age or the food habits of our grandparents that were so much healthier. I am sure most would agree that these are worth preserving. Today, if parents are abandoned by children in old age homes, I would consider it a great civilisational tragedy because our tradition is to revere our parents. It’s important to understand that everything in the name of modernisation is not good. Do you think kids who grow up on junk food are any healthier?
But traditions are not cast in stone. By their very nature, they are supposed to evolve constantly and meet the changing requirements of time and social contexts. And, it’s okay to rebel if you are facing genuinely oppressive situations at home or in community. But rebellion for its own sake not only uproots you emotionally and culturally from your dear and near ones, it also leaves you rudderless and lonely.
