Small Pain in my chest is one the best poem of Michael Mack . The poem gives us a deep message on how a war can give us deep mental pain.
The poem starts with the description of the soldier boy ,how quietly he was sitting underneath the tree .When the narrator passes by him he began beckoning him. He wants a sip of water as he had fought the whole night without taking any rest .The battlefield must be in some Asian country as suggested by the texts. There was craters created by the bombs .A number of bodies were lying on the ground .The soldier boy considered himself luckier than his fellow soldiers as they lost their life but he was having only a small pain in his chest.
He thought that it must be fatigue as the day has just started and he was feeling cold . The soldier boy narrates his story on how he and his fellow soldiers climbed thr hill and defeated the enemy . But due to one bomb blast there he was not able to fight from then .He said that how foolish is that a man full of vim and zest had been defeated by a small pain in his chest.
Then he said what his wife would think and what would his mother think when they would get to know that he was defeated by a small pain in his chest .
Again he asked,"is it darkening" He said that all he need is some rest and after that he will be perfect to travel and after saying this he died.
The narrator had probably hugged him and he says that the his mental pain is much greater than that if soldiers physical pain . War only gives us some remarks which we can't forget for our lifetime.
