The printed issue of BW Smart Cities Magazine has just been released this week with an article I wrote about the new Smart City trends in India. New Delhi will be hosting the Smart City Expo india in May 2016 an d I will be there speaking again. During my last trip to India I have already given my impression about the smart City mission.

Urban migration is one of the main reason to plan smart cities, in 30 to 40 years time we are expecting to have a domestic "Rural-Urban" migration in India of more than 300 million people. It means that whatever efforts we do now to mitigate the urban problems they will not be enough. Cities will definitely collapse. So, to discuss seriously about Smart City means not only apply ICT in “smart solutions” to assuage the current problems but undoubtedly to focus on the concept of smart villages. To avoid the migration from countryside or non-urban areas to the metropolis can solve big part of the problems we will face in the near future. Until now it was still a feeble trend, but it is becoming popular. In Europe, countries like Italy and England have been already for a quite long time discussing about the next generation sustainable communities in order to promote the progress also in small towns. It means that the discussion about Smart City philosophy is not only related to mega cities, but also to small villages.

My personal opinion, highly influenced by my previous experiences in managing investment attraction for Smart Cities projects, is that the money to afford and sponsor Smart cities projects around the world is coming from the private sector, mainly through the PPPs. If local government management uses this money in a "Smart" way to attract domestic and foreign investors to the projects, you will see the magic happening .

The equation is simple: private sector is strugling for new markets to invest and new consumers to replace the traditional markets that are aging and are already mature like Europe and Japan. So, India cities have much more to offer than a big budget, they have 1+ billion consumers and a fresh and growing economy to add to the deal.

We are now certainly facing a new era of smart city development. More cities are adopting the philosophy and citizens are becoming the main stakeholder in the process. All the long, costly and hard path taken by the pioneers can be now effectively shortcut. Public-private partnership are assuming a new dimension and playing an important core role. It is definitely a great moment for the indian cities to embrace the concept, what we call the perfect storm, where we have a fast growing urban population combined with a huge infra-structure challenges; the second world’s largest number of potential consumers and an explicit support from central government. I deeply believe that India has all the elements to achieve the Smart Cities mission goals and succeed.
