Smart people talk a lot only when the occasion calls for it, when it's smart to do so. While words come easily to them, they also know it's smart to keep quiet at times when further discussion won't get things done, when it's not worth it to sweat a battle.
They listen more than they talk, usually with the intent of learning more from the intercourse than showing off their erudition for everyone to see. They know better not to cast their pearls about when swines abound.
Most of the time, they talk less and do more.

Smart people talk, while wise people listen.
It means that when you talk, it shows how much you know, how smart you are and how much knowledge resides in your mind. But when you listen, you become wise because observation is always the most important way of acquiring knowledge. When you listen, you learn a lot of things.
