let X be the number Smita thought of

[x-5/2]8=3x

[2x-5/2]8=3x

16x-40/2=3x

8x-40=3x

8x-3x=40

5x=40

x=40/5

x=8

Solution:

Let the number be x.

Now, according to question,

\sf{\implies \Bigg(x-\dfrac{5}{2}\Bigg) 8 = 3x}

\sf{\implies 8x - \dfrac{40}{2}=3x}

\sf{\implies 8x - 20 = 3x}

\sf{\implies -20 = 3x-8x}

\sf{\implies -20 = -5x}

\sf{\implies x = \dfrac{20}{5}}

\large{\boxed{\boxed{\red{\sf{\implies x = 4}}}}}

Verification:

\sf{\implies \Bigg(x-\dfrac{5}{2}\Bigg) 8 = 3x}

\sf{\implies \Bigg(4-\dfrac{5}{2}\Bigg)8 = 3\times 4}

\sf{\implies 32 - \dfrac{40}{2} = 12}

\sf{\implies 32 - 20 = 12}

\sf{\implies 12 = 12}

LHS = RHS

Hence Proved!!!
