Answer:

With the belief that you meant that Smita went to buy pens taking Rs.25 with her, I am answering this question.  Please ignore my answer if I have used the wrong amount (that was taken by Smita.)

If one pen costs Rs. 2.25, 8 pens will cost 2.25 x 8 = Rs. 18.

She is left with Rs. 7, with which she could have purchased 3 pens.

(Amount of money remaining divided by the cost of one pen.  7/2.25 = 3.11111.... .  You cannot buy 3.1111 pens and can only buy pens in a whole number (eg, 2, 3, 5 etc.).  Therefore, truncate the values after the decimal point (you don't need them), leaving you with 3 pens.
