Smut of wheat and red rot of sugarcane is a fungal disease

  • Ustilago tritici is the fungus which is responsible for smut of wheat. It's mainly accompanied by stiffness in leaves and yellow coloured leaf streaks. Presence of olive brown spores is one of the prominent symptoms.
  • This fungi Ustilago tritici belongs to Basidiomycetes . It has a branched and septate mycelium.
  • Colletotrichum falactum is the fungi responsible for red rot of sugarcane. Glomerella tucumanensis is the modern preferred name of this disease. It's mainly accompanied by change in the leaf colour on the midrib which turns from green to yellowish orange then eventually red
  • This fungi belongs to Deuteromycetes. It can only reproduce asexually as sexual forms are not known.
