SOLUTION

GIVEN

 \sf{S _n = 3n + 1}

TO DETERMINE

The common difference of the Arithmetic progression

EVALUATION

Here it is given that for a given arithmetic progression

Sum of n terms is given by

 \sf{S _n = 3n + 1}

Putting n = 1 we get

Sum of 1 term

= First term

= 3 + 1

= 4

Putting n = 2 we get

Sum of 2 terms

= First term + Second Term

= 6 + 1

= 7

∴ Second Term = 7 - 4 = 3

Common Difference

= Second Term - First term

= 3 - 4

= - 1
