What was the mysterious thing? How was the mystery solved?

The mysterious thing was the butter that had suddenly disappeared.

Harris thought it was extremely mysterious how the butter was nowhere to be found. He knew that George had placed the butter on the chair, but when they looked there, it was not there.

The mystery was solved when George looked at Harris’ back and found the butter stuck there.

Harris had taken a seat on that very chair and so, when he got up, the butter got on his clothes and wasn’t there on the chair anymore.
