Social disparity was one of the major cause of the french revolution because the nobility and clergy were the privileged classes that were exempted from taxes while only third estate had to pay the taxes and the taxes were going to increase.

(a) The first estate consisted of the clergy. The second estate consisted of the nobility. The third estate consisted of merchants, court oflicials, lawyers and big businessmen. lt also

consisted of the peasants, artisans, landless labourers and servants.

(b) The rnembers of the first two estates enjoyed _certam privileges by birth -these being exemption from paying taxes and coiiection of feudai dues generaiiy extracted from the peasants. '

(c) The burden of paying taxes was borne by the Third Estate. '

(d) These inciuded a direct tax caiied the “taiiie” and a number of indirect taxes which were levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt or tabacoo
