Kandakuri Rao Bahadur Veerasalingam Pantulu was a social reformer as well as writer of Madras Presidency (an administrative sub-division of British India) during the British rule. Veeresalingam is regarded as the father of the renaissance movement in Telugu. He was one of the early social reformers who encouraged remarriage of widows and women education which were not supported by the society in his time and he also fought against the system of dowry.
EXPLANATION:
- Veerasalingam had immense respect for the activities and ideas of ‘Brahmo Samaj. He opened a girl’s school for girls as he genuinely felt the necessity for encouraging women’s education. After quitting his job he started a publication at Rajahmundry in Telugu and through this Veerasalingam raised voice against superstitious beliefs, child marriage, and bribery that were rampant in society then.
- His publication also encompassed many articles on the empowerment of women. In 19th century, women hardly had any position in the society because of the corroding social values; hence Veerasalingam created cognisance about the significance of women’s education. He advocated remarriage of young widows by way of his speeches and writings. He spoke against child marriage, evils of caste system.
- He founded the ‘Rajahmundry Social Reform Association’ which focussed on widow remarriage. During his lifetime he got around 40 widows remarried. He encouraged people to think freely and rationally, to love freedom and equality. Being a very bold social reformer, Veerasalingam never acceded to the pressures from society. He worked relentlessly towards elevating the status of women. He also donated his property and wealth to Rajahmundry Widow’s home and school.
