The fishing villages along the coads in Kerala are mainly composed of people who are largely illeterate. Their literacy levels are much more lower than those of other fishermen in the country. The dependancy ratios are high, ranging from two to as high as five. The level of mechanization is low and therefore most of them cannot catch a lot of fish per day. They live in villages by the sea in conditions that are not very good. Most fishermen are men and therefore women largely work in the secondary sector and tertiary sector of fishing. The villages they live in are not very well developed in other sectors and therfore most people depend on fish as the primary source of income.
