The Gupta empire, an Indian empire spanned from the 3rd century CE to 543 CE. It was the period which was regarded as the Golden Age of India. The founder of the empire was King Sri Gupta. The most noteworthy king of the Gupta dynasty were Chandragupta I, Chandragupta II and Samudragupta.
There were different activities which infused a new energy into the economic condition of Gupta empire`s . Agriculture was one of them which provided subsistence as well as source of various export goods. The river Ganga, Brahmaputra, Godavari, Narmada and Krishna were seen as the source of irrigation.
The presence of land ownership and share cropping was very much prevalent. Handicraft and Textile industries too flourished and provided a living for the citizens. Good quality cloth were processed through different sources of thread like animal skin and wool .
Statutes were created by carving ivory and bones.Fan were made out of feathers. The huge presence of Gold, Silver and Copper in the rocks helped in producing coin during the period.
The economic condition under the Guptas was stable. As a result the economic condition during this period flourished immensely. The social condition however depicted a different picture. It was influenced more by religion.
The society was divided by caste . The Brahmins were considered as the highest class, followed by the rulers and warriors, artisans and merchants and untouchables.
People belonging to different classes did not gel well with each other. Men enjoyed more rights than their counterparts(women). The women stayed in the background and were disrespected. In simple words the society was divided on the basis of cast, creed and gender.
Hope this helps.
