Sodium is a metal belonging to group 1 of the periodic table and has a valency of +1 whereas chlorine is a non-metal belonging to group 17( group-VIIa) of the periodic table with a valency of -1.

Sodium(Na) with atomic number 11 has an electronic configuration of 2,8,1. Therefore in order to reach the octet state( having 8 electrons in its outermost shell), it has to lose one electron from its valence shell, thereby forming a cation.

Chlorine(Cl) with atomic number 17 has an electronic configuration of 2,8,7. Therefore, to reach an octet state, it has to gain one electron, thereby forming an anion.
