Sodium is a metal and it has only one electron in its valence shell which can be easily lost to attain a stable noble gas configuration. Chlorine, on the other hand is a non-metal and has 7 electrons in its valence shell. It would rather gain an electron than losing. Thus, sodium has a very less ionization energy.
