Aldehydes and ketones are generally liquid so the probable method for purification is distillation which is time consuming. The corresponding sodium bisulphite (NaHSO3) addition compounds are crystalline solids, easily purified by recrystallization after which they can be easily converted back to the parent aldehyde or ketone.
