we know that sodium is highly reactive with water but sodium amalgum is very less reactive towards water. this is why sodium cannot be preserved in water as compare to sodium amalgum.

sodium is a highly reactive metal so it i can not preserved in water in its free state but the metal loose their individual properties and has all the properties of alloy in the case the sodium alloy with the help of amalgam ,so it can be kept in water
