Description

Sodium Carbonate is the disodium salt of carbonic acid with alkalinizing property. When dissolved in water, sodium carbonate forms carbonic acid and sodium hydroxide. As a strong base, sodium hydroxide neutralizes gastric acid thereby acting as an antacid.

NCI Thesaurus (NCIt); DrugBank

Given: Total sample of soda ash = 5 grams

            Sodium carbonate = 2.27 grams

            Sodium bicarbonate = 1.09 grams

To find: Percent composition of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate in sample

Solution: Total sample = 5 grams

Other component in sample = 5 - ( 2.27 + 1.09)

                                               = 5 - 3.36

                                               = 1.64 grams

Percentage of sodium carbonate = (mass of sodium carbonate/total sample) ×100

                                                       = (2.27/5)×100

                                                       = 45.4%

Percentage of sodium bicarbonate in sample = (mass of sodium bicarbonate/total sample)×100

= (1.09/5)×100

= 21.8 %

Therefore, the percent composition of sodium carbonate in the sample is 45.4% and of sodium bicarbonate in the sample is 21.8%.

  • Soda ash is Na₂CO₃.10H₂0 also called washing soda and soda crystals. It is a white, odorless, water-soluble salt that gives the moderately alkaline solution in water.
  • The percent composition is the mass percentages of each component of the element in a compound. The sum of all the masses in a mass percentage is equal to 100%
