The difference in electronegativity between sodium and chlorine is more than 1.7 so, its ionic compound , the valency electron transfer from Na to Cl .

The Hydrogen chloride is covalent because the ionization energy of hydrogen and chlorine is large so no atom tend to loss electrons , so they share one pair of electrons

answer :-

an ionic or electro valent bond is favoured by hight electron affinity and high electronegativity and this is available in nacl but with hcl it is not
