sodium chloride is formed as a result of transfer of electrons and hence it is an ionic compound.

Explanation:

  • The sodium ion is is just one electron less than the sodium atom. The sodium atom loses an electron to form the sodium ion which has the noble gas configuration. On the other hand the chlorine atom is one atom less than the inert gas configuration and as a result of this it accepts the electron from sodium
  • as a result of this there is formation of the compound of sodium chloride.
