Sodium has 11 electrons so it can easily gain electrons . but in its elemental state sodium just lacks an electron its like i nedd an electron desperately ! so close yet so far. thus it reacts with anything just to gain an electron bot immediatly stablizes ant then in its ionic state is so stable that we can actually eat it!

the atom of sodium has one elctron in its outer most shell to get stable electronic configuration it should loose that electron then all the shells will be completely filled
