Sodium ion is already stable so it won't react while sodium atom is unstableand reactive and tends to lose one of its electrons. Sodium of table salt does not react with water like sodium metalBECAUSE it separates from chlorine as ionic sodium and ionic sodium isstable and it is solvated hence it does not react
