sam287: Sodium is high reactive element. If it is kept in open it can explosively react with oxygen to catch fire.Hence to prevent accidental damage sodium is immersed in kerosene oil.

SODIUM METAL IS KEPT IN KEROSENE BECAUSE SODIUM AND POTASSIUM ARE VERY HIGHLY REACTIVATE SO THAT THEY CAN CATCH FIRE WHEN KEPT IN OPEN ENVIRONMENT.

Sodium is highly reactive . So it's kept immersed in kerosene oil to prevent its reaction with oxygen , moisture and carbon dioxide of air to prevent accidental fires .
