Sodium metal should be kept in kerosene as sodium metal is highly reactive and catches fire when exposed to air so it is stored in kerosene os that it should not come in contact with air.
If sodium gets in contact with air it will react with the miosture present in air to form sodium Hydroxide. While forming sodium hydroxide a very large amount of heat is produced.
Hope it helps
