Na + H2O ----› NaOH + H2

Although this equation can be easily solved by using hit and trial method!

But let's solve it by using Algebraic method!

What's Algebraic method???

In this method we assume stoichiometry coefficient of each reactant and product.

aNa + bH2O ----› cNaOH + dH2

Here a,b,c and d are the assumed stoichiometry coefficient.

For Na -
LHS = RHS
a = c......(1)

For H -
LHS = RHS
2b = c + 2d.......(2)

For O -
LHS = RHS
b = c.......(3)

Let's say that the stoichiometry coefficient of a = 1
then
c = 1.......(from 1)

b = 1.......(from 3)

From 2nd equation,
2b = c + 2d
2 = 1 + 2d
2-1 = 2d
d = 1/2

So, final equation is--›

Na + H2O ---› NaOH + 1/2H2
OR
2Na + 2H2O ---› 2NaOH + H2
