sodium reacts violently with cold water (as well as air) as it is a highly reactive metal whereas iron does not as it is not so reactive. to prevent the reaction of sodium with air and water, it is stored in kerosine. Sodium is more reactive then iron there for sodium react with cold water.

1.As the reaction between metal and cold water is highly exothermic , hence, the hydrogen gas produced in this reaction catches fire and burns causing little explosion. 2. In case of Iron: Iron is very less reactive compared to sodium, hence it cannot react with cold water.
