The soft iron inside the coil makes the magnetic field stronger because it becomes a magnet itself when the current is flowing as compared to steel. Soft iron is used because it loses its magnetism as soon as the current stops flowing. Soft iron is said to form a temporary magnet. So, soft iron core is used in Electromagnet and not Steel.

Here is your answer


If steel is used for making the core of an electromagnet, the steel does not lose all its magnetism when the current is stopped and it becomes a permanent magnet. Therefore steel is not used as the core of electromagnet.
