Some kinds of steel (such as silicon steel) are sometimes used in electromagnets, but soft iron is usually preferred as it has a very high saturation field, so it can tolerate large magnetic fields, and it also has very low coercivity, so it “turns off” more completely when the current is removed. It is also usually less expensive to manufacture electromagnet cores from soft iron, as it can easily be cast into the desired shape.

electromagnet. Soft iron isused as the core of electromagnetsbecause it is magnetized quickly and it easily loses its magnetism when removed from the current.
