Briefly, drought brings a general lack of rainfall, which leads to death and decay of organic matter within the soil in the region. The organic matter no longer keeps the composure it otherwise would have, and its surface area lessens due to drying. Not only does organic matter suffer a surface level deterioration, clay within soils do as well. When clay lose water as a result of drought and evaporation, they also lose a separating factor which abates them from becoming a single, nearly uniform, mass. This leads to another drastic lessening of surface area.

The significance of this surface area deterioration is simply this; without surface area to absorb water, soil will not be able to maintain its composition during rainfall. Pooling will occur, and nutrients at the surface of the soil will be washed away by various different rainfall based erosion processes. So, all in all, drought will deteriorate soil, when the drought ends and the rains begin, the soils will not have any mechanisms with which to maintain their composure, and they will be eroded swiftly and efficiently.
