Role of water in soil formation Rocks on earth’s surface are not chemically stable and constantly undergo the process of weathering. It is the first step of soil formation. Chemical weathering involves the breakdown of primary minerals in the rock to new minerals that are more stable in the surface environment. Water is the essential agent in chemical weathering. It either reacts directly with the minerals or carry dissolved species which themselves react with the mineral.
