Soil stabilization is the permanentphysical and chemical alteration of soils toenhance their physical properties.Stabilization can increase the shear strengthof a soil and control the shrink-swellproperties of a soil, thus improving the load-bearing capacity of a sub-grade to supportpavements and foundations. Stabilizationcan be used to treat a wide range of sub-grade materials from expansive clays togranular materials. Stabilization can beachieved with a variety of chemicaladditives including lime, fly ash, andPortland cement, as well as by-productssuch as lime-kiln dust and cement-kiln dust. These are the existing techniques to improvesoil stabilization. This paper presents thedetails of studies conducted on the possibleuse of waste plastic for soil stabilization. Wethink that the addition of plastic strips intothe soil will be a innovative technique toimprove the shear strength, tensilestrength and California bearing ratio (CBR)value of the soil in an economic way.
INTRODUCTION
Soil stabilization can be done inmany ways. But the stabilizationusing waste plastic fibers is an economicmethod since the stabilizer used hereis waste plastic materials, which are easilyavailable. A
plastic
material is any of a widerange of synthetic or semi-syntheticorganicsolids that aremoldable.Plastics aretypicallyorganicplasticsof highmolecularmass, but they often contain othersubstances. They are usually synthetic, mostcommonly derived frompetrochemicals, butmany are partially natural.
PLASTIC AS A SOIL STABILIZER
In the investigation the wasteplastic materials has been chosen as thereinforcement material and it was randomlyincluded in to the clayey soils with differentplasticity indexes at five differentpercentages of fiber content (0%, 1%,2%,3%, 4%) by weight of raw soil. The use of plastic fibers in unreinforced soiltremendously increases the CBR value
