The state characterized by crested hills and widely spaced valleys, has about 10% area under cultivation. The red and yellow soils are moderately deep, acidic and deficient in phosphorus.

RED AND YELLOW SOIL :The soil develops a reddish colour due to a wide diffusion of iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks. It looks yellow when it occurs in a hydrated form. Often, their upper layer is red and the lower layer is yellow.

LATERITE SOIL: Laterite is both a soil and a rock type rich in iron and aluminum and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock.

BLACK SOIL: Chernozem is a black-colored soil containing a high percentage of humus and high percentages of phosphoric acids, phosphorus, and ammonia. Chernozem is very fertile and can produce high agricultural yields with its high moisture storage capacity.

COLOR OF SOIL IN MANIPUR

The soil color (Dry method) of three different village of Jiribam district, Imphal East, Manipur. The soil color of the village varies from brown to gray color. The sample of Lakhipur and Hilghat is mostly of light- yellow brown in color. Whereas the Kamranga soil is light gray color.
