Solar cells are the basic building blocks of a solar panel causing a power production on incoming light.Several solar cells are connected in series or parallel as per the output required.I can tell you the basic differences between the two;-

Series:To increase the voltage required,can lead to increase in series resistance.current is the same the output power is increased.

Parallel:-To increase current at particular voltage. As current increases and Voltage=const., the power also increases .The shunt resistance of the panel decreases.
