Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. It isused primarily as a cooling agent. Its advantages include lower temperature than that of water ice and not leaving any residue (other than incidental frost from moisture in the atmosphere).

Solid Carbon dioxide is called dry ice because it resembles ice, but carbon dioxidedoes not exist in liquid form, it sublimes straight from a solid to a gas. Hence "Dry Ice". It sublimes at –78°C becoming an extremely cold gas. It is often used in theatres or nightclubs to produce clouds, it looks a bit like smoke
