Solid ice is lighter that water- Explain why?

In between the water molecules is nothing.In liquid water the molecules of water can be much closer together the hydrogen bonds are more flexible ...simply because ice as a solid is less dense then water.As water cools down,it reaches its maximum density at around 4 degree centrigrate
