it is mainly because of the mass difference . if you take the case of solid iron ball, you will find that the mass is spread evenly throughout it and has more mass compared to hollow sphere because HOLLOW SPHERE has nothing in its inner portion it is empty and has air in it which keeps pushing it outward in all directions.

main thing : ball is solid and has more mass compared to hollow sphere and can SURPASS the BYOYANT  FORCE applied by water where as sphere cant
