Solids generally undergo process of melting on heating. But , only specific solids like naphthalene undergo sublimation. why?

Some solids have very high vapour pressures due to which heating leads to direct vaporization (sublimation) even before the melting point is reached. In other words, there are some solids whose vapour pressure overtakes that of the liquid before melting can occur. Such substances sublime without melting.Example: dry ice, naphthalene, iodine, camphor etc.

Explanation:

Sublimation means when a solid changes directly into gaseous state without going into the liquid state.

Naphthalene undergoes sublimation because naphthalene is highly volatile in nature and there is weak force of attraction between its molecules. As a result, it undergoes sublimation even at room temperature.

Naphthalene is used as mothballs and due to sublimation they decrease in size over a period of time.
