The ‘Man on the Train’ is an account by Alex Haley about his father.

Simon Alexander Haley was born to a former slave and share cropper. He went on to complete high school and enrolled in college, a rarity during those times. But he failed in one of the subjects and had to stop education for want of money. Fortunately, he was selected as a sleeping car porter with the Pullman Train Company, when he happened to be spotted by a gentleman, who was impressed with his language skills and service. This gentleman sponsored the rest of his college education.

Alex Haley (1921 – 1992) is an acclaimed American author.
