Given that :

2ˣ + 3 = 4ˣ + 1

To find :

The value of x .

Solution :

2ˣ + 3 = 4ˣ + 1

Let 2ˣ = a .

Then,

a + 3 = a² + 1

⇒ a² - a - 2 = 0

⇒ a² + a - 2a - 2 = 0

⇒ a(a + 1) - 2(a + 1) = 0

⇒ (a - 2)(a + 1) = 0

⇒ a = 2 or a = -1

But we know that 2ˣ > 0 ∀ x ∈ R

So, a = 2 only.

⇒ 2ˣ = 2

⇒ 2ˣ = 2¹

x = 1     (∵ base are same so powers must be equal for equality to hold)

Hope this helps : )
