Step-by-step explanation:

2x + y = 8 (1)

x + 2y = 7 (2)

from equation 1

2x = 8 - y

x = 8/2 - y/2

put it in equation 2

8/2 - y/2 + 2y =7

8 - y + 4y = 14

3y =6

y = 2

put it in equation 1

2x + 2 =8

then

x =3

so the values of x and y are 2 and 3 respectively.
