x = 15 and y = 5.

3x - y = 40 .........(1)

4x-2y = 50 ........(2)

Multiply (1) with 2 and subtract it from (2)

4x - 2y = 50

6x - 2y = 80

-2x = -30    

Therefore x = 15.

Multiply (1) with 4 and multiply (2) with 3 and subtract them.

12x - 4y = 160

12x - 6y = 150

2y = 10          

y = 5.
