4x - 2x = 40 - 20

2x = 20

x = \dfrac{20}{2}

x = 10

--------------------------------------------

Verification :

substituting x for 10,

(4×10) - (2×10) = 40 - 20

40 - 20 = 20

LHS = RHS = 20

Hence verified.

--------------------------------------------

To solve these sums we have to add or subtract the like terms.

Example : 4x + 2x = 6x

What are Like terms and unlike terms?

Any term which has the same variable as the other is considered to be like terms and any two terms which does not have the same variable is known as unlike terms.

Examples :

Like terms : 4y and 5y

Unlike terms : 5x and 8y

-----------------------------------------------

Important points to remember :

In any complete equation there are 2 sides - LHS and RHS.

LHS is the left hand side and RHS is the right hand side.

Any constant or variable moves from LHS to RHS or RHS to LHS, their signs change.

Example :

2x + 4 = 0

when we take 4 to the RHS,

2x = 0 - 4

2x =(-4)

Same applies with divison and multiplication.

  • Addition changes to subtraction.
  • Subtraction changes to addition.
  • Multiplication changes to division.
  • Division changes to multiplication.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE :

(-) × (-) = (+)

EXAMPLE : (-4) × (-4) = (+16)

(+) × (+) = (+)

EXAMPLE: (+4) × (+4) = (+16)

(-) × (+) = (-)

EXAMPLE : (-4) × (+4) = (-16)

(+) × (-) = (-)

EXAMPLE : (4) × (-4) = (-16)
