5x + 2y = 2

and

2x + 3y = -8

we will use substitution method to solve this,

then,

5x + 2y = 2

can also be written as

x = (2 - 2y)/5

and,

2x + 3y = -8

can be written as

x = (-8 -3y)/2

now here the value of 'x' is constant. So, we equate them

i.e. (2 - 2y)/5 = (-8 -3y)/2

or, 4 - 4y = -40 - 15y

or, 4 + 40 = -15y +4y (taking the variables on one side)

44 = -11y

therefore, y = -4

then by out the value of y in any one of the equation we get the value of x as follows

5x + 2(-4) = 2

5x = 2+8

5x = 10

therefore, x = 2

The values of x and y are 2 and -4 respectively.
