x = 2 y = - \frac{3}{2} or, - 1.5

Step-by-step explanation:

The given equations are:

5x + 4y - 4 = 0                     ......... (1)

and x - 12y - 20 = 0             ......... (2)

To find, the values of x and y = ?

Multiplying equation (1) by 3, we get

3(5x + 4y - 4) = 0

15x + 12y - 12 = 0                     ......... (3)

Adding equations (2) and (3), we get

x - 12y - 20 + 15x + 12y - 12 = 0

⇒ 16x = 32

⇒ x = 2

Put x = 2 in equation (1), we get

5(2) + 4y - 4 = 0

⇒ 10 + 4y - 4 = 0

⇒ 4y + 6 = 0

⇒ 4y = - 6

⇒ y = - \frac{3}{2} or, - 1.5

∴ x = 2 y = - \frac{3}{2} or, - 1.5
