Step-by-step explanation:

4(m + 3) = 18 \\ 4m + 12 = 18 \\ 4m = 18 - 12 = 6 \\ m = 6 \div 4 = 1.5

Answer:

(a)  4 (m + 3) = 18

     4m + 12 = 18

    4m = 18 - 12

    4m = 6

    m = 6/4

    m = 3/2

(b)   -2 (x + 3) = 5

       -2x - 6 = 5

      -2x = 5 + 6

      -2x = 11

      x = 11/-2

      x = -11/2
